Bringing Up Baby – “Gay All of a Sudden”
A 1930s romantic comedy starring Cary Grant playing a disgruntled paleontologist and Katharine Hepburn playing a troublesome heiress.
When Susan takes David’s clothing he is forced to wear a negligee and answer the door. Here he meets Mrs. Random, the woman he was supposed to make a good impression on so she would give the money to the museum. Argueablely this is the first film where the word “gay” had been used to describe homosexuals (at the time homosexuals had called themselves that but it hadn’t gone mainstream) in a film. This was an ad-libbed line that Cary threw into the scene.

for now, this movie is incredibly tame, but in 1938, the production code was very strict. i am surprised that a lot of this movie got through. later on in the movie, cary grant calls a character ‘mighty white’. and this whole ‘went gay’ line. plus, cary was pretty well exposed there for a second.

It was sort of a …
It was sort of a code word used among gays back then, although mainstream didn’t really know about it. Carey Grant knew a bit about that culture, so if he did indeed adlib that scene, it’s very likely HE knew exactly what it meant, even if movie-goers didn’t quite get it at the time. It’s my belief that they thought he was using gay in a slightly altered version of the way it was used then. That he had become happy, pleasant, girlish… but I dunno.
