(Class Lecture, 08/30/01) Contrary to what you might believe, most of the funk bands of the time were not vulgar or profane but rather they were and in some cases still are misinterpreted revolutionaries. Soldiers of fortune, who thought by living their idea of a free and colorblind society on stage, would somehow transcend the auditoriums and move out to the masses.

The sixties and seventies were turbulent times for America, and especially the black community. The Civil Rights movement, racism, drugs, and the Vietnam War had an overwhelming effect on the entire American society.
